The cause of cold sores is a herpes simplex virus infection. The infection may break out when the immune system is weakened, during stress or during menstrual periods for women. The virus causes blisters or cold sores, mainly on the lips. Docosanol is an antiviral agent that aids in the treatment of this infection.
Cold sores are contagious so avoid kissing and sharing drinks/food with other people while you have one.
